A STEP BACK IN TIME – THE STORY OF THE TUXEDO

The tuxedo – the epitome of style for men’s formalwear.  But where did it originate?.

It originated in Victorian England where it was designed as a more informal dress code for upper class gentlemen to wear in the evenings instead of their tailcoats.  Wikipedia states that notes that men wore their dinner jackets with matching trousers, a white or black waistcoat, a white bow tie and a white wing-collared formal shirt.  During the Edwardian era, the black bow tie became a more common accompaniment than the white one.

After World War 1, the tuxedo became the standard evening wear – so much so that it became known as ‘semi formal’ wear in the United States.  The tuxedo was elevated to special occasion Formal Wear rather than standard evening wear after the Second World War.   By the 1960s, a ‘black tie’ dress code was seen to upholding the traditions of formal evening with tuxedoes, whilst formal wear became more open to individual flair, with the introduction of patterned or coloured jackets, bow ties, waistcoats and cummerbunds.   The cummerbund was derived from military dress uniform in British India and is generally made of the same material as the bow tie and lapels.

Today, midnight blue remains the only acceptable colour for the standard dinner jacket.

The traditionalists and the etiquette police regard tuxedos as appropriate dress only AFTER the sun has gone down – never before.  The laws of etiquette also dictated that men should not take their jackets off at formal occasions until the guest of honour (or the highest ranking man there) took theirs off first.

The black tie has seen some interesting times throughout history, but has lost none of its style, elegance and grace, says Margaret River formal wear supplier, Stepping Up Menswear.  So when the dress code says ‘dinner jackets’, haul out your penguin suit (or hire one from a formal hire company) and walk the path trod by so many gentlemen of distinction centuries before you.
