My flowers are silks; I've already made the bouquets and boutanniers. The trick is to wrap each stem to only one other with the floral tape and build them gradually. Trying to tape several stems at once will allow them to shift and you won't get what you pictured in your head.
My centerpieces are going to be floral, but you could always use the old standards of candles, mirrors, etc. I've also read of people using large hurricane vases filled with round balls in their colors. I imagine you could do some really cool stuff with styrofoam, paint, and glitter. You could wind ribbon around the balls, or fill in the gaps with colored tissue paper.
Cake, okay, I'm really excited about my cake. I'm not making it myself, but I'm stacking the tiers myself. You can email me if you need to know how, but the instructions on the Wilton cake decorating website will probably be much more helpful.
By stacking the tiers myself, I can just buy the cakes from my supermarket bakery at regular price. I'm going to save a ton of money! I've actually decided to go with filled sheet cakes instead of round cakes (I figure if people can have square cakes, why not rectangle?). The bottom layer will be a half sheet, the middle layer a quarter sheet, and the top layer an eighth sheet. I'm going to order the cakes without an icing border around the top, so they'll look right, and if any of the cake board shows, I'll just fill in the gaps with some silk flower heads. The whole thing is only going to cost about $55.00, and everyone will be able to get a normal-sized slice of cake, not the little two-inch bite that's the typical Wedding Cake slice size.
