I need to know if my chameleon is dieing?
He has been at the bottom of his cage. He is moving more sluggish than normal. His color is more of a blond sand color (he is not blending in) with tiny black spots. I have had him for 4 years so far. He is a veiled chameleon. He has plenty of crickets & water in his well lit cage. Please help me!!!! Is he dieing?
He is not grasping to my hand like he used to.
He does have a uvb light & he is normally held. I hold him regularly & he is not afraid of me.
Sounds like it could be MBD (Metabolic Bone Disease) and yes could die from it.
Have you been changing your light source regularly? Tube UV bulbs need to be changed every 4 to 6 months and Mercury Vapor every year (it will still give off light just not UV). If they have run out of UV as an adult it could take them many months to develope MBD. It will show up a lot faster in a juvenile. Unusual color change, sluggishness, problems with motility and appetite will all be factors. You can usually tell it is MBD by very gently pressing on there leg or jaw and if it feels like it bends or gives a little then you have your problem figured out. It will give like long an uncooked spagetti noodle, but don't press too hard or it will break very easily.
You would need to change your UV light, become a bit more aggressive about calcium dusting and gut loading crickets, and then make sure he has access to a heat source since he is unable to climb to it. However you will need to make sure it is not too hot and he is still able to get away from the heat source to cool off. If you are able find a reptile veterinarian (www.ARAV.org) and they have injections and more advise that could help. Remember not to leave crickets in the cage with him when he is in this state or else the crickets may chose to feed on him instead of the other way around. You will need to stop handling very much him during this process until he is recovered. These little guys do get stressed out more than other reptiles.
Only other thing I can think of is if he had a parasite overload and the stress helped them take over. In any case that still needs to be checked out and dewormed accordingly.
I hope this helps. Good luck.
